"Jacqueline has been my voice teacher and mentor for over three years. Without fail, she tailors her lessons to the individual student and strikes a wonderful balance between constructive criticism and reaffirmation. Her guidance has helped me to better trust my inherent strengths as a musician, work through performance anxiety, and sing with greater freedom and relaxation. Jacqui's good humor and vocal expertise would be an asset to any student."
(Michele Kennedy, voice student, Trio Eos)

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

"I believe that freedom- freeing the body, the mind-is the key to freeing the voice and producing a healthy supported sound. My students learn to work hard to support the breath while at the same time opening up the chest, the throat, the "mask" through posture and focus exercises that allow the air to move freely, to "spin" and the vocal production to be full and vibrant without being pushed or forced. I also firmly believe that kindness and humor, mixed with directness, are the most effective teaching tools towards producing a relaxed, confident, vocally flexible and open-minded artist." - Jacqueline Horner

"Jacqueline is an incredible teacher. I feel beyond fortunate to be her student. She is inspiring, warm, clear and generous, with a delightful sense of humor and
unflinching honesty. She zeros in on exactly what can be improved upon. Nothing is forced. One gets out of one´s own way. The ease of proper "alignment" in all aspects of vocal production is sought after...and found! It is nothing short of miraculous! And she sings like an angel!"
(Barbara Dana, voice student)

MASTERCLASSES/RECITALS

Jacqueline has given successful masterclasses all over the US, including most recently Mannes School of Music NYC and SUNYOswego, NY, working with students on opera, oratorio and song, everything from Bach and Handel to contemporary music. She has also on occasion combined a masterclass with a recital, performing music related to the masterclass and working with students/faculty from the music department and beyond.

"Thank you so much for sharing your insights and expertise with our students at the Mannes College of Music. The master class was so well received and beneficial for all of the participants. The atmosphere you created was very positive and encouraging. An enjoyable experience for all that we hope to repeat in the near future."
(Beth Roberts, Head of Vocal Studies, Mannes College of Music)

CHORAL/ENSEMBLE TECHNIQUE WORKSHOPS

Jacqueline has led ensemble workshops all over the world, most recently at NYU in New York and as part of the faculty at the choral workshop Musica Deo Sacra in DC. They consist of :

  • Posture exercises
  • Group breathing exercises ,working on developing the "group breath"
  • Group warm-up - eg, humming, portamento scales, vowel matching, working on connecting the breath to the sound.
  • Listening/awareness vocal exercises- eg. passing sound around the circle, putting sound in the center of the circle, eyes open then eyes shut, learning to listen to the group and to create the "group sound".
  • Listening/awareness games- eg the name game, word association game, passing rhythms and phrases around and across the circle, layering sound and rhythm- all requiring listening and awareness- and fun too!
  • Also consonant exercises, work on "casting" the vocal line and then applying all this to pieces that the ensemble have already worked on (and ideally also on pieces that they are less familiar with)

This workshop is for any rep- the basics for good ensemble singing are the same no matter what the rep is.

"It was a great thrill to have Jacqueline participate in our 2006 choral workshop Musia Deo Sacra...not only were we able to hear her sing with fellow faculty members- a wonderful demonstration of the art of the consort singer-but we also benefited from her ensemble coaching skills, and her private voice lessons."
(Philip Cave, founder of The Tallis Scholars and director of Chorworks)

TREVOR CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
